What conversion tracking services should small businesses use for online ads?

The minimum viable tracking stack, and what you can skip until you scale

A small business needs four things: Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager, native conversion tracking on whichever ad platforms you run, and call tracking if the phone rings. Three of those four are free. Everything else can wait.

The minimum viable stack

  • Google Tag Manager. One container on the site so you can add and fix tags without a developer every time.
  • Google Analytics 4. Free, and the baseline for site behavior. Define your key events deliberately rather than letting the defaults decide what counts.
  • Native platform conversion tracking. The Google Ads tag, the Meta pixel and its server-side counterpart, the LinkedIn insight tag. These are what the bidding algorithms learn from, so they are not optional if you want the platforms to optimize.
  • Call tracking, if a meaningful share of your leads call. Paid, usually modest, and the only way to know which campaign produced the phone call.

What you can skip for now

Enterprise attribution software, a customer data platform, a data warehouse, and a full server-side tagging container. All of them are real and all of them are premature under a few thousand dollars a month in spend. The cost of running them exceeds the money they would save you. We will tell you when the threshold is close.

The two mistakes that cost the most

First, counting the wrong thing. If every form on the site counts as a conversion, including the newsletter signup and the job application, your cost per conversion is fiction and the ad platform is optimizing toward the wrong people. Pick the action that means money.

Second, stopping at the pixel. Leads that reach a CRM with their source attached let you see which campaign produced revenue, not just which produced form fills. That is the step that changes budget decisions, and it is not expensive to build at small scale.

Set up in that order and you will have better data than most businesses spending ten times as much. If you want help, that is part of our analytics work.
