How do you track phone call leads from ads?

Dynamic number insertion, call recording, and scoring calls as qualified or not

Use dynamic number insertion: a script swaps the phone number displayed on your site for a tracking number tied to the visitor's source, so the call arrives with the campaign attached. Without it, every phone lead is a blank line in your attribution.

How dynamic number insertion works

A visitor arrives from an ad. A snippet on the page replaces your listed number with a forwarding number assigned to that source. The visitor calls it, the call routes straight through to your real line, and the system logs which campaign, keyword or ad produced it. Google offers a version of this natively. Per Google's documentation on tracking calls to a phone number on a website, a phone snippet replaces the number on your site with a Google forwarding number, and the call counts as a conversion when it lasts longer than a minimum length that you set.

Google's native version only covers Google Ads traffic. A dedicated call tracking platform covers every source, including Meta, organic search, direct and print, which is why we usually run one instead.

What to set up

  • A number pool large enough that two simultaneous visitors from different sources do not share a number.
  • A minimum call duration before a call counts. Thirty to sixty seconds filters wrong numbers and hangups.
  • Call recording, with the announcement your state requires. Texas is a one party consent state, but if you take calls from elsewhere, announce.
  • A CRM push, so the call creates or updates a contact with its source attached rather than sitting in a separate tool.

The part most people skip: scoring

A tracked call is not a qualified call. Some are vendors, some are wrong numbers, some are existing customers. If you push raw call counts back to your ad platform as conversions, you teach it to buy noise. Review calls, mark each one qualified or not, and only send the qualified ones back as conversions. That is the step that turns call tracking into better bidding rather than a bigger number.

We wire this through integrations into the CRM as part of our analytics work. Our review of the tool we most often use is here: WhatConverts Review.
