Should we hire LevelUp Digital on a retainer or as a one-time project?

Projects fit a defined build. Retainers fit ongoing work that compounds, like SEO and ads.

Buy a project when the work has a finish line, and a retainer when the work compounds. A website, a HubSpot implementation or a brand identity is a project. Ads, SEO and social are retainers, because stopping them does not pause progress, it resets it.

What belongs in a project

Anything with a defined deliverable and an end date. A website build starts at $4,500, with most builds landing between $5,000 and $10,000. A HubSpot implementation is scoped by hubs, tier and data complexity. A brand identity or a custom integration is the same shape: you agree the scope, we build it, it ships, and you are not paying us next month for it.

Projects are the honest answer more often than agencies admit. If what you actually need is a site that does not embarrass you and tracking that works, buy that, run it for six months, and come back when you have something to scale.

What belongs on a retainer

Paid advertising, SEO and social media all improve with time in market. Ad platforms need conversion volume to optimize against. SEO compounds because content and authority accumulate. Social depends on cadence. In all three cases a stop and start pattern costs you more than running a smaller version continuously, which is why the ad minimum is $1,500 a month and SEO starts at $1,850 a month rather than being sold in one off bursts.

The middle option most people miss

The flexible digital support retainer, from $1,900 a month for 10 hours up to $6,750 for 40, exists for the in between case: you have a list of things that need doing, they are not all the same discipline, and you do not want to scope a separate project for each one. See the published tiers.

When the answer is neither, yet

If you cannot answer what a customer is worth to you, or your site has no working conversion tracking, spending on a retainer is spending blind. Fix that first. It is usually a small project.
