Should I change my Google Business Profile categories?
Primary category is the single biggest lever. Changing it is also the riskiest edit.
Change a secondary category freely. Change the primary category only with a plan, because it is the single biggest lever on the profile and the easiest one to break. Often the right answer is to leave it alone.
What categories actually do
The primary category maps your profile to a set of queries you are eligible to appear for. Secondary categories broaden that set without diluting the primary one. Google's guidelines are specific: use as few categories as possible, choose categories that describe what the business is rather than what it has, and do not use categories solely as keywords.
That last rule matters. Adding eight loosely related categories in the hope of catching more searches is exactly what the guideline prohibits, and it tends to make your relevance signal muddier rather than broader.
When a change is justified
- Your primary category describes something you no longer do, or something that is a small share of revenue.
- A more specific category exists that matches your actual core service, and your competitors in the map pack use it.
- Your business genuinely changed.
When it is not justified: a rank drop with no other explanation, a blog post you read, or a hunch. Those get you a second problem on top of the first.
How to test one properly
Record your current map pack positions for your core terms from several points across your service area first, because map results shift with the searcher's location and a single check tells you nothing. Change exactly one thing. Wait at least two to four weeks. Google reviews profile edits before publishing them, so give the change time to take effect and settle. Then compare against the same set of check points.
If the change hurts, revert it. If nothing moves, that is a useful result too: your ceiling is somewhere else, usually reviews, proximity, or the content on your own site.
