How do you track whether local SEO is working?

The four metrics that prove local SEO is paying, and the ones that lie to you.

Track four things: calls, direction requests, form fills from local pages, and booked jobs. Everything else is context. A rank screenshot is not a result, and in local search it is not even a reliable number.

Why a single rank number lies

Distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors, so map pack position changes with the searcher's location. A tool that reports you at position two is reporting position two from one point. From three miles east you might be position seven. Any honest local report samples a grid of points across your service area and shows the spread, and even then treats it as a leading indicator rather than the outcome.

The four metrics that matter

  • Calls. Use call tracking with a number that is consistent across your profile and site, and record call outcome, not just call volume. Fifty calls of which forty are wrong numbers is not growth.
  • Direction requests. Available in your Business Profile performance data. For a storefront this is the closest free proxy for intent to visit.
  • Form fills from local pages. Tagged by source and landing page so you can tell which city or service page produced them.
  • Booked jobs and revenue. The only number the business actually cares about.

Connect it back to the CRM

A local lead is only useful as proof if it carries its source into your CRM and then to a closed deal. That means source tracking on forms, call tracking that writes back to the contact record, and consistent deal stages. In HubSpot that is a straightforward setup, and it is what turns impressions and calls into a revenue conversation with your leadership.

Also watch the supporting signals: Business Profile views and searches, branded search volume, and reviews gained per month. They explain movement. They are not the result.
