How does local SEO work for a service-area business with no storefront?

How to rank in towns you drive to when you have no address to show.

You hide your address, set your service areas correctly, and accept that you will rank strongest near where your business is actually based. A service area business can absolutely win in local search. It just cannot fake a presence in a city it does not operate from.

Set the profile up the way Google requires

  • Google defines a service area business as one that visits or delivers to customers but does not serve them at its business address. If that is you, Google's guidelines say to remove the address from the profile.
  • You can list up to 20 service areas, defined by cities, postal codes, or other geographic designations. Google says the overall boundary should not exceed about two hours of driving time from where the business is based.
  • Radius based service areas can no longer be set. Use named places.
  • Service area edits can take up to 48 hours to be approved and visible.
  • P.O. boxes and unstaffed virtual offices are not acceptable addresses under Google's guidelines. Using one is a common cause of suspension.

Why you still rank best close to home

Distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors, and for a service area business the distance is measured from your registered address, not from the edge of your service area. Listing 20 cities does not place you in 20 map packs. It tells Google and customers where you will travel.

What has to carry the far towns

Two things. First, real city pages for the places where you have genuine demand and genuine coverage, with actual local proof: jobs completed, photos, named neighborhoods, service specifics. Not a template. Second, paid search, which is not distance limited the way organic map results are. For home services in particular, Local Services Ads often do the heavy lifting in outer towns while organic holds the core.

The honest version: pick the five or six places you actually want to grow, and do real work for those, instead of spreading thin across 20.
