How do you rank for "near me" searches?

Near me is a proximity signal, not a keyword. Here is what you can actually control.

You do not optimize for the phrase near me. You strengthen the three signals Google uses for local results, and proximity is the one you cannot control. When someone searches plumber near me, Google discards near me and ranks by relevance, distance, and prominence from where that person is standing.

What Google actually says

Google's local ranking help page lists three factors. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far each business is from the searcher. Prominence is how well known the business is, influenced by links to your site and by review volume and ratings. Google also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

What you can and cannot move

  • Cannot move: distance. If you are 14 miles away and three competitors are within two, you will not out rank them organically for a searcher standing there. That is the whole answer, and most agencies will not say it.
  • Can move: relevance. Primary category, services, and the service specific content on your own site. Being unmistakably the right kind of business for the query.
  • Can move: prominence. Reviews, local links, press, and general brand strength. This is the slow one and the one that compounds.

Where near me traffic actually comes from

Stuffing near me into page titles does nothing. What helps is being genuinely findable for the underlying service plus location intent: real service pages, a complete profile, and enough review prominence to survive a comparison in the map pack.

When you need coverage outside your proximity radius, that is a paid problem, not an organic one. Local Services Ads and local search ads sit above the map pack and are not distance limited the same way, which is exactly why they exist.
