How do you do keyword research that still works in AI search?

Start from questions and intent, not a volume column in a tool.

Start with the questions your buyers actually ask, in their words, then use a keyword tool to validate and prioritize. Starting from a volume column gets you a list of head terms you cannot win and will not convert.

Why the order changed

When an answer engine assembles a response, it pulls from pages that address a specific question well. Those pages are almost always long tail. A term with a hundred searches a month that exactly matches what a buyer types before they call you is worth more than a term with fifty thousand searches that attracts students and competitors. Head terms still matter for orientation. They are a bad place to start.

Where the real questions come from

  • Sales calls. The objections and the same four questions every first call. Record them.
  • Your search term report. If you run paid search, you are already paying for the exact phrasing people use. Mine it.
  • Support tickets and chat logs. The questions people ask after they buy are the ones they worried about before.
  • Search Console. Queries where you already show up on page two but nobody clicks. You are close, and the page is wrong.
  • The assistants themselves. Ask ChatGPT or Gemini your buyer's question and read what comes back. That is your competition.

Then validate

Now open the tool. Check volume, difficulty and, more usefully, cost per click, because a high CPC means somebody is paying for that intent. Group into clusters rather than a flat list, one cluster per buying decision, and decide which cluster gets a pillar page and which get supporting articles.

What to stop doing

Stop writing one page per keyword variant. Stop chasing volume you cannot rank for. Stop treating the tool's number as truth: it is an estimate, and it does not see the conversations happening inside an assistant at all. Our position on this has not changed, and it is spelled out in Stop Obsessing Over Keywords.
