What is a pillar page and how do you build a content strategy around one?

One deep page, a cluster of supporting articles, and internal links that tie them.

A pillar page covers one broad topic end to end on a single URL, and links out to a cluster of shorter articles that each go deep on one piece of it. The internal links between them are the actual strategy. The page is just where they meet.

How the model works

Pick a topic broad enough to support a dozen subtopics and narrow enough that you can own it. Write the pillar as the complete overview: what it is, why it matters, how it works, what it costs, how to choose. Then write a satellite article for each subtopic, and link every satellite to the pillar and the pillar to every satellite. That link pattern tells a search engine these pages belong together and that the pillar is the center of the topic.

Why it works better than a pile of blog posts

A blog full of unconnected posts on eleven different topics signals nothing. Thirty pages that all orbit one subject, cross linked, signal that this site is about that subject. Topical authority is earned by density and structure, not by word count.

A knowledge base is a cluster

The article you are reading sits in one. Each entry answers one question, links to its neighbors, and points back to the deeper piece. That format happens to be almost exactly what an answer engine wants to quote, which is why we treat a knowledge base as a content asset rather than a support cost. We wrote about that in HubSpot Knowledge Base: Your Secret Weapon for SEO and AEO.

What it takes to run

Consistency more than volume. One pillar and eight to twelve satellites, published over a quarter, beats forty scattered posts. Our SEO retainers are built around that rhythm: L1 at $1,850 a month produces six optimized articles, and L2 at $2,800 adds two more articles or pillar pages a month, which is the tier where pillar production actually fits.
