Why was my Google Business Profile suspended and how do I get it reinstated?
The common suspension triggers and the reinstatement steps, in order.
Most suspensions trace back to three fields: the business name, the address, or the categories. Google suspends or disables profiles that do not follow its guidelines, and the guidelines are more specific than most business owners realize.
The usual triggers
- Keyword stuffed business names. Google's guidelines prohibit adding taglines, service or product descriptors, location descriptors, phone numbers, URLs, store codes, and trademark symbols to the name field. The name must match your real world name as used on signage and stationery.
- Address problems. P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes are not acceptable. Virtual offices are not eligible unless staffed during business hours with customer facing signage. Google also requires permanent fixed signage at the address.
- Duplicate profiles. Google says not to create more than one page per location.
- Service area setup errors. Keeping a visible address when you do not serve customers there, or setting an area far outside the roughly two hours of driving time Google describes as the boundary guideline.
- Category misuse. Using categories purely as keywords, or listing categories for businesses located nearby or inside yours.
The reinstatement steps
Google's documented process is: use the Business Profile appeals tool, which shows the restriction reason and the policy it cites. Prepare supporting evidence before you start, because Google notes documents must be submitted within 60 minutes. Useful evidence includes business registration, a license, a tax certificate, or a utility bill at the address, plus photos of your exterior signage.
Google states explicitly: do not create a new Business Profile for the same business while your appeal is under review. That is the single most common way a recoverable suspension becomes a permanent mess. If the appeal is denied you can request an additional review.
Fix the cause first
Before appealing, bring the profile into compliance. Strip the keywords out of the name. Remove the address if you do not serve customers there. Delete the duplicate. Appealing without fixing the violation usually produces another denial. Google does not publish a decision timeline, so plan for this to take weeks rather than days.
