Which Google Ads bidding strategy should you use, and how do you pace budget?

Manual to automated is a data question. Pacing and seasonality are planning questions.

Pick the bidding strategy your conversion volume can actually support, not the one you wish you had. Automated bidding needs conversions to learn from, and every strategy change restarts that learning.

Match the strategy to the data

  • Manual CPC still has a place in a brand new account with no conversion history. Google notes manual CPC is not subject to learning periods, which makes it a reasonable place to gather the first weeks of clean data.
  • Maximize clicks is a traffic strategy, not a lead strategy. Useful briefly to seed data, dangerous as a permanent setting.
  • Maximize conversions is the usual next step once conversions are tracked properly and arriving steadily.
  • Target CPA and Target ROAS want consistent conversion volume and a stable definition of a conversion. Set targets from your own math, not from an aspiration.

Respect the learning period

Google's help documentation says a bid strategy can take up to around 50 conversion events or three conversion cycles to calibrate, and that learning is triggered by a new strategy, a setting change, a composition change such as adding or removing campaigns, ad groups or keywords, and ad group target changes in Shopping. It also notes that duration depends on conversion volume, how long your conversion cycle is, and the strategy type. The practical rule: change one thing, then leave it alone long enough to read.

Pacing across the month

Daily budgets can flex above the daily number on high traffic days and settle over the month, so judge pacing monthly rather than panicking on a Tuesday. What matters is that you are not exhausting budget by the third week, and that you are not underspending so badly that campaigns never gather data. Check spend against plan weekly.

Seasonality without letting automation overreact

A slow week is not a signal, it is weather. For genuine, predictable swings such as a promotion or a known busy season, plan the budget change in advance and make it in steps. Do not slash budgets in a slow week and restore them in a busy one, because each swing costs you another learning period and the campaign never gets good at anything.
