What is technical SEO and what does it cover?
Crawlability, indexation, speed, and internal links: the plumbing behind rankings.
Technical SEO is everything that determines whether a search engine can find, fetch, understand and keep your pages. It does not write your content. It decides whether your content ever gets read.
What it covers
- Crawling. Robots rules, crawl traps, parameter URLs, and making sure your budget is not spent on pages that do not matter.
- Indexation. Canonical tags, accidental noindex directives, duplicate pages, and Search Console coverage errors. The single most common serious problem we find is a page nobody meant to block.
- Site architecture and internal linking. How many clicks from the homepage to a money page, and whether anything links to it at all. Orphan pages are invisible pages.
- Redirects. Clean one to one 301s, no chains, no loops. Critical during any redesign or migration.
- Speed and rendering. Core Web Vitals, image weight, script bloat, and whether the mobile version renders the same content as desktop.
- Structured data. Schema emitted correctly by the template and validated.
- Hygiene. Sitemaps, HTTPS, broken links, and 404s that used to be real pages.
How much of it you need
Less than the tools suggest, and more than most sites have. A well built site needs a few hours a month of maintenance and a full pass after any significant change. A site that has been edited by six people over eight years needs a real cleanup first. That is why our SEO retainers include a standing block of technical time: three hours a month at L1, six at L2. It is not glamorous work and it is where the fastest wins usually are.
Build it in instead
Most technical SEO problems are inherited from a template that was never built for it. Handled correctly during development, clean markup, sensible URLs, emitted schema and fast rendering are the default rather than a monthly repair job.
