What is streaming audio advertising and does it work for local businesses?

Spotify, Pandora, and podcast inventory bought by audience and geography.

Streaming audio advertising is bought inventory on Spotify, Pandora, iHeart, and podcast networks, targeted by audience and geography instead of by station. It works for local businesses, but only when the message survives being heard rather than seen.

How the inventory is bought

Most streaming audio is sold programmatically through the same demand side platforms used for display and CTV, which means you can target by zip code, demographic, listening context, and in many cases a matched customer list. Podcast inventory splits into two kinds: dynamically inserted spots, which are targetable and measurable like any programmatic buy, and host read spots, which are sold by the show and priced by its audience.

Ads usually run 15 or 30 seconds. On most platforms the spot is accompanied by a companion banner on the app screen, which is the only clickable element in the whole format.

What makes an audio ad work

  • Say the brand name early and again at the end. A listener who hears the offer but not who made it is a wasted impression.
  • Give one action, spoken in a form a person can hold in their head while driving. A vanity URL or a plain company name beats a tracking link nobody can type.
  • Do not read a display ad out loud. Write for the ear: shorter sentences, one idea, real voice.
  • Use the companion banner. It is free reinforcement and it carries the only click in the buy.

Measurement reality

Audio is judged the way other awareness media is judged: branded search lift, direct traffic lift, promo code redemption, and call volume against a clean baseline. Click through rate on a companion banner is a weak proxy and should not drive decisions. Set the baseline before launch, because you cannot reconstruct one afterward.

Honest guidance on fit: audio is a supporting channel. If you have not yet saturated search demand in your market, spend there first. Audio earns its place when you have more budget than search can absorb and you need frequency against a defined local audience.
