Geofencing advertising draws a virtual boundary around a physical place, collects the mobile devices observed inside it, and serves ads to those devices afterward. It is location based retargeting for the real world.
The mechanics, step by step
- A buyer draws a polygon on a map. Not a radius around a pin, an actual traced shape around the building, the lot, or the event hall.
- When a phone inside that shape sends a location signal through an app that is passing bid requests, the mobile advertising ID gets added to an audience.
- That audience is then targeted with display, video, or in app ads for a set retargeting window, commonly 15 to 30 days.
- If the campaign includes walk in measurement, the platform watches for those same device IDs appearing inside a conversion zone you drew around your own location.
What determines whether it works
Three things, in order. First, precision of the fence. A sloppy polygon that spills into the parking lot next door pollutes your audience with people who were never at the place you care about. Second, volume of foot traffic inside the fence. A location with a hundred visitors a week cannot produce a campaign. Third, the offer. Reaching someone is easy. Giving them a reason to act is the hard part, and no amount of location precision fixes a weak offer.
What it costs and who it is for
