What is a Google Business Profile and how does it work?

The free Google listing that decides whether you show up in maps and local results.

A Google Business Profile is the free listing Google uses to represent your business across Search, Maps, and increasingly in AI generated answers. It is what sits behind the pin on the map, the panel on the right side of a branded search, and the three businesses shown above the organic results.

What it replaced and what it holds

It is the successor to Google My Business. The management tools moved directly into Search and Maps, so you now edit your profile by searching for your own business while signed in, rather than through a separate dashboard.

The profile holds your business name, categories, address or service areas, hours, phone number, website, services, products, photos, attributes, posts, questions and answers, and your Google reviews. It also reports performance data: how people found you, what they searched, and which actions they took.

How verification works

Google verifies that the business is real and that you represent it. Per Google's help documentation, the available methods include phone or text, email, a live video call, and mail. Google states that most mailed codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30, and that after you complete verification Google reviews the information, which can take up to five business days. Google also states that the verification methods available to you are determined automatically and cannot be chosen.

Why it matters more than your website for local intent

  • For local queries, the map pack usually appears above organic results. The profile decides whether you are in it.
  • Calls, direction requests, and bookings can happen without anyone visiting your site at all.
  • Answer engines read structured business data. A complete, consistent profile is one of the cleanest signals available about who and where you are.

It costs nothing, and for most local businesses it is the highest return hour of marketing work available.
