What is a good conversion rate for a landing page?

Why the benchmark you find online is usually the wrong number for your business.

A good conversion rate is whatever rate makes your cost per qualified lead work at the volume you need. There is no industry number that answers this for you, and the ones you find online usually make things worse.

Why published benchmarks mislead

Published averages blend traffic sources, offers, deal sizes, and definitions of conversion that have nothing to do with each other. A page offering a free checklist and a page asking for a demo of a $90,000 system are both counted. Branded search traffic and cold display traffic are both counted. Some studies count newsletter signups as conversions and some do not.

The result is a number that is technically accurate and practically useless. If your rate is below it you panic for no reason, and if you are above it you stop improving.

The math that does answer it

Work backward from money. Say a click costs $8, one in four leads becomes a qualified opportunity, one in four qualified opportunities closes, and an average deal is worth $6,000 in gross profit.

  • At a 2 percent conversion rate, 100 clicks costs $800 and produces 2 leads, so a lead costs $400 and a qualified opportunity costs $1,600. Closing one in four means a $6,000 deal costs $6,400 to acquire. That does not work.
  • At a 5 percent rate, the same $800 produces 5 leads at $160 each, a qualified opportunity costs $640, and a closed deal costs $2,560. That works.

Now you know your target is somewhere north of 4 percent for that specific page and that specific traffic. Change any input, especially deal value or close rate, and the target moves. Run the same calculation with your own numbers and you will have a real answer in ten minutes.

Compare against yourself

The second useful benchmark is your own baseline, segmented. Measure conversion rate by traffic source, by device, and by page. Branded search will convert several times better than cold display, and that is normal, not a problem. What matters is the trend within each segment.

And always pair conversion rate with lead quality. Any page can double its conversion rate by asking for less. Whether that helped depends entirely on what sales does with the extra volume.
