Should you send SMS or email, and which SMS tool works best with HubSpot?
Email for depth, SMS for urgency, and why LevelUp recommends Salesmsg over native SMS.
Use email for anything that needs detail or can wait, and SMS for anything time-sensitive and short. For HubSpot users, LevelUp Digital recommends Salesmsg over HubSpot's native SMS.
Which job belongs to which channel
- Email: newsletters, nurture, proposals and documents, onboarding sequences, anything with links, anything the recipient might want to find again later.
- SMS: appointment reminders, delivery and status updates, a fast reply to a fresh inbound lead, a short two-way conversation with someone who already knows you.
The mistake is using SMS as a cheaper email blast. It is not cheaper in the way that matters. A text interrupts. Interrupt someone with a promotion they did not ask for and you do not get an unsubscribe, you get resentment and a carrier complaint. Text people who are expecting to hear from you.
The strongest case for SMS is speed to lead. A text within a couple of minutes of a form fill, from a real person, reliably outperforms an email sent an hour later.
Why Salesmsg over native SMS
LevelUp is a HubSpot Platinum Solutions Partner and recommends HubSpot for nearly everything, so this is a deliberate exception. Salesmsg is the better tool for two-way business texting: it gives your team a proper shared conversation inbox, it fits how sales reps actually work a thread, and it keeps the messaging history on the HubSpot record. HubSpot's native SMS is workable for simple automated sends, but teams that text conversationally consistently outgrow it. Our full comparison is in our SMS texting pick for HubSpot, and calling options are in our phone system comparison.
Consent and opt-outs
SMS consent is its own consent. An email opt-in is not permission to text, and you generally need express written consent for marketing texts. Identify your business in the first message, include opt-out language, and honor STOP immediately.
Most importantly, keep SMS opt-outs inside the same suppression logic you use for email. At LevelUp that means the request lands in the master non-marketable suppression workflow and, where appropriate, the separate Do Not Contact lead status, so a person who asked you to stop is stopped everywhere rather than in one tool. The compliance detail is in our compliant SMS marketing guide. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
