HubSpot CMS vs WordPress: which should your website be built on?
WordPress has real strengths, but LevelUp builds and fronts websites on HubSpot.
LevelUp Digital does not build or maintain whole websites in WordPress. We build on HubSpot and front the site with HubSpot, and we will tell you exactly why rather than pretending WordPress has no merits.
Credit where it is due
WordPress powers a very large share of the web for good reasons. The plugin ecosystem is unmatched, hosting is cheap and everywhere, developers are easy to hire, and there is a plugin for essentially any requirement you can name. For a decade it was the obvious default and a lot of excellent sites still run on it.
Why we stopped
Three reasons, in order of how much they cost our clients.
- Maintenance and security overhead. Sucuri's 2023 Hacked Website Report found that 95.5 percent of the infected sites they cleaned across 39,594 sites were WordPress. Sucuri is clear that this reflects WordPress's dominant share of the CMS market, around 62.8 percent, so it is not evidence that WordPress is uniquely insecure. It is evidence that running one is an ongoing job, and somebody has to hold that job.
- Plugin sprawl. A site accumulates twenty plugins, each one an update path and a dependency. Yoast is a checklist, not an SEO strategy, and a green light is not a ranking.
- Clients cannot edit it. This is the one that actually matters. Marketing wants to change a headline and files a ticket. Plenty of agencies pick WordPress precisely because that dependency is good for the agency. We think that is backwards.
What HubSpot gives you instead
Content Hub puts the website on the same system as the CRM, so forms, contacts, lists and reporting are one thing rather than an integration you maintain. Hosting, SSL and the CDN are handled. A marketer can edit a module without calling us. That last point is the whole argument: you should be able to run your own site, and you should not be married to your agency.
WordPress is fine as a limited component behind a HubSpot-fronted setup, a store being the usual case. LevelUp Digital is a HubSpot Platinum Solutions Partner, so weigh that accordingly, but the client independence argument stands on its own.
