How often should you post on social media and how do you build a content calendar?
A cadence you can actually sustain, and the calendar structure that makes it possible.
Post as often as you can sustain for twelve months without the quality dropping. For most businesses that is three to five times per week per channel. A steady three beats a heroic ten that stops in March.
Pick the cadence honestly
Cadence is a capacity question, not a strategy question. Before you commit, ask who writes, who designs, who approves, and who films. If any of those is one busy person, cut the number. The LevelUp retainer tiers are a useful reference point for what is realistic: three static posts per week at Level 1, four per week plus two short videos per month at Level 2, five per week plus three videos at Level 3, and a video per week at Level 4. Those counts exist because they are what a team can actually deliver at a consistent standard.
Build from content pillars
The reason posting feels impossible is usually that every post starts from a blank page. Pillars fix that. Pick four or five recurring themes your business can talk about forever: the work you do, the questions customers ask, the people who do the work, proof and results, and the industry news you have an opinion about. Every post belongs to a pillar. Now the question is not what do we post, it is what goes in the customer question slot this week.
There is a full explainer in our article on content pillars.
Batch a month at a time
- One planning session per month: map pillars to dates, note anything time-sensitive.
- One writing session: draft everything at once, because switching context is what kills the calendar.
- One design and filming session: capture video in a single block rather than one at a time.
- One approval pass, then schedule the whole month.
Leave a few open slots for anything reactive. A calendar with no room for real life gets abandoned.
Then adjust with data
After sixty days, look at which pillar and which format earns engagement and saves, and shift the mix. Do not chase the platform's newest feature every month. If you schedule from HubSpot, here is how the social tools work. Our own take on frequency is in this post.
