How do YouTube ads work and when are they worth running?

YouTube is cheap reach with real targeting, but it rarely closes a lead by itself.

YouTube buys attention cheaply with real targeting behind it, but it almost never closes a lead on its own. Run it when you need people to know who you are before they search, and measure it on assisted conversions and branded search lift, not last click.

The formats worth knowing

  • Skippable in stream: plays before or during a video, viewer can skip after five seconds. The workhorse format. You generally pay when someone watches a meaningful portion or interacts.
  • Non skippable in stream: short spots the viewer must watch, bought on impressions. Good for reach, resented by viewers, best kept short and interesting.
  • In feed video: appears alongside results and recommendations, and is chosen by the viewer, so intent is higher.
  • Shorts: vertical placements that reward native looking, fast creative. Repurposed landscape TV spots underperform here reliably.

Targeting

You can target by audience, including your own remarketing lists and customer lists, by topic and keyword, and by placement on specific channels. Retargeting site visitors and past leads is usually where a lead generation business should start, because the audience already knows the brand and the cost to reach them again is low.

The measurement problem, stated honestly

Last click reporting will make YouTube look like a waste of money. The realistic evaluation is whether branded search volume, direct traffic and overall lead volume rise while YouTube runs, and whether view through and assisted conversions show up in your analytics. If you cannot measure that, you are not ready to spend on YouTube.

What it costs you beyond media

Our management fee covers running the campaign. It does not cover producing the video. Video beyond the creative counts included in a plan is quoted separately, and shooting a commercial is a separate project entirely. Plan for creative cost before you plan the media budget, because bad creative on YouTube fails no matter how good the targeting is.
