How do you avoid ad fraud, bad placements, and overexposure in programmatic?
Viewability standards, placement blocklists, and frequency caps do most of the work.
You control programmatic quality with three specific levers: buy certified and verified inventory, enforce a viewability threshold, and cap frequency. Each solves a different problem, and skipping any one of them costs money in a different way.
Fraud: buy from channels that are measured
Invalid traffic is manageable if you buy inside audited supply. The TAG US Fraud Benchmark Report published in November 2023, researched by The 614 Group, measured an invalid traffic rate of 0.82 percent across TAG Certified channels against 1.19 percent in non certified inventory over the first half of 2023. The practical takeaway is not the exact number. It is that verified supply paths are measurably cleaner, and that any vendor who cannot name the verification partner measuring your campaign is asking for trust you have no basis to give.
Wasted impressions: hold a viewability floor
The MRC and IAB viewable impression standard counts a display ad as viewable when at least 50 percent of its pixels are in view for at least one continuous second, and an in browser video ad when at least 50 percent is in view for at least two continuous seconds. That is a low bar, which is exactly why you should set a campaign level viewability target above it and pay for measurement against the standard rather than against a vendor's own definition.
Overexposure: cap it before launch
- Set a household or user level frequency cap across the whole plan, not per campaign. Three separate caps of four a week is twelve a week.
- Suppress converters. Continuing to serve someone who already bought is pure waste and it annoys a customer.
- Review the placement report monthly and blocklist junk domains, made for advertising sites, and apps that do not belong near your brand.
Ask for the placement report, the viewability report, and the verification vendor name in writing before you sign. A buyer who intends to do this properly will hand them over without being pushed.
