How do I change the services, hours, and photos on my Google Business Profile?

Step by step edits, plus which changes trigger a re-review from Google.

You edit a Google Business Profile by searching for your own business while signed in to the Google account that manages it, then using the edit panel that appears in Search or Maps. Google reviews changes before they go live, and some edits carry more risk than others.

Services, hours, and photos

  • Services. Open Edit profile, then Services. Add Google's predefined services where they fit your category and add custom services where they do not. Write a description for each one. Adding services is low risk.
  • Hours. Set regular hours under Edit profile, then Hours. Add holiday and special hours separately as they come up. Note that Google's guidelines say some business types should not list hours at all, including businesses that operate only by appointment.
  • Photos and video. Add them from the Photos section. Google's specs are JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB, recommended 720 by 720 pixels and a minimum of 250 by 250. Video can be up to 30 seconds and up to 75 MB at 720p or higher. New uploads sit pending until approved, typically within a day or two.

Which edits are risky

Google states that if you change your business name after verification you might need to verify again, and if you move to a new address you must verify again. Those two are the ones that can take a profile offline temporarily. Category changes and address format changes are also reviewed more carefully than a photo upload.

Low risk edits: photos, services, description, attributes, posts, regular and holiday hours. Higher risk edits: business name, address, primary category, and switching between storefront and service area. Google notes that service area edits can take up to 48 hours to appear.

Practical advice

Make one significant change at a time and give it a week. Keep a record of what you changed and when, so that when something moves you know which edit moved it. And never fix a rejected edit by creating a second profile. Google's guidelines say not to create more than one page per location.
