Google Ads vs Local Service Ads: which drives better leads?
LSAs sell verified local jobs, Google Ads gives control and reach. Most run both.
Local Services Ads are better when you sell a small number of standard local jobs and want pay per lead simplicity. Google Ads is better when you need control over messaging, targeting and the page people land on. Most established local service businesses should run both, with LSAs first.
How they differ
Google's Local Services help documentation describes a pay per lead model: you pay when a customer calls or messages you, not per click. Businesses go through a screening process to earn what Google now calls the Google Verified badge, and Google notes that verification is currently unavailable for the auto, beauty and dining verticals. LSAs sit above regular search ads and show your reviews and service area.
Google Ads charges per click, lets you write the ad, choose the landing page, layer audiences, and run remarketing. It reaches searches LSAs do not cover, including research stage queries and services that do not fit an LSA job type.
Lead quality and disputes
LSA leads are usually high intent because the person initiated contact. They are not always relevant, and this is where expectations need setting. Google's documentation on automated lead credits says charged leads are reassessed by its models over time and may be credited automatically if later judged low quality, but it also states Google no longer supports credits for job type not serviced or geo not serviced. Practically, that means your service areas and job types inside the LSA profile are now your main lever for quality. Keep them accurate rather than broad.
Which should lead
- Lead with LSAs if you are a home services, legal or similar local business with straightforward jobs, real reviews, and the licensing to pass screening.
- Lead with Google Ads if your services are specialized, your differentiator needs explaining, you sell outside LSA categories, or you need to control which page the lead lands on.
- Run both once volume justifies it. They occupy different space on the results page and one does not cannibalize the other as much as people assume.
