What is the fastest way to improve return on ad spend?

Stop the spend that cannot convert before you try to win more of it.

Subtraction is faster than addition. Confirm your conversions are real leads, read your own search term report, tighten geography to the area you actually serve, and send each ad to a page that matches it. Those four moves beat any bid adjustment in the first month.

Confirm the conversions first

If the account counts page views, duplicate form fills, or one second phone taps as conversions, your reported ROAS is fiction and automated bidding is being trained to chase fiction. Fix this before anything else. Everything below assumes the numbers are real.

Read your own search terms, not somebody else's list

The single fastest win is usually spend going to searches that were never going to buy. Finding them is a method, not a download:

  • Open the client's own service pages and sitemap and write down what they actually sell, in their words.
  • Confirm the service area they genuinely cover and will travel to.
  • Pull the real search terms report for the last 60 to 90 days, sorted by cost, and read it line by line.
  • Sort each expensive term into wrong intent, wrong geography, or a service you do sell but describe differently. The third bucket is a copy and landing page fix, not an exclusion.

Block research intent words such as how to, diy, free, jobs, salary and career. Never block a service noun, a product noun, a manufacturer or brand name, or a city you might serve. A borrowed negative keyword list is dangerous precisely because it looks efficient: it was built from someone else's business and it will silently cut off demand you are paid to capture. We have seen shared lists block real, revenue producing searches for months before anyone noticed.

Tighten geography

Check the location settings, including whether the campaign targets people in the area or people merely interested in it. Wide radius targeting is one of the quietest sources of waste in small accounts.

Then fix the page

Match the headline on the landing page to the promise in the ad, put the offer above the fold, and make the form short. Winning more of the same traffic is a page problem more often than a bidding problem.
