Does short-form video actually matter for business social media?
Why short video earns reach, what it costs to produce, and how much you really need.
Yes. Every major platform distributes short vertical video to people who do not follow you, and almost nothing else gets that treatment anymore. If you want reach beyond your existing audience without paying for it, video is the way in.
Why it works
Static posts mostly reach people who already follow you, and not many of them. Short video goes into recommendation feeds, which means strangers. It also does something a static post cannot: it shows a person. In service businesses, where the buyer is choosing who to trust, a face on camera closes distance faster than a carousel of stock photography.
What it actually costs you
The honest part. Short video is cheap to produce and expensive to sustain. A phone and decent light is enough equipment. The cost is the recurring thirty to sixty minutes of a knowledgeable person's time, every single week, plus editing and captions. Businesses do not fail at video because of production quality. They fail because the owner stops showing up after six weeks.
So plan for volume you can hold. On LevelUp retainers, Level 2 includes two short-form videos per month, Level 3 includes three, and Level 4 includes one per week. Video beyond the included counts is quoted separately, and none of the tiers include shooting a commercial. Those counts are deliberately modest, because consistent is worth more than frequent.
What to shoot
- Answer one real customer question per video. Your inbox is the content calendar.
- Show the work happening. Process footage outperforms talking heads in trades, construction, and anything physical.
- Hook in the first two seconds, with the payoff stated, not teased.
- Burn in captions. Most viewing is silent.
- Shoot vertical, once, and cut it for every platform rather than making platform-specific originals.
When to skip it
If nobody in the business will go on camera and you are not willing to hire a presenter, do not buy a video package. You will get generic stock edits that perform worse than a good static post. Spend that budget on paid reach instead. AI tools can help with editing and repurposing, covered in our roundup of AI video tools, but they cannot manufacture a point of view.
